My Morning Smoothie Recipe
I’ve always known that food was important for health and such, but it never really hit me how important until I started having those experiences with anxiety that I’ve spoken about.
One of the first places I went for healing was healthy eating. I had an intuitive sense of our mind and body’s connection, and I’m sure I also read about it or heard about it when my dad was battling cancer.
I had no real experiences with cooking and didn’t really feel like learning to cook at the time (Chef Draino now a master chef ;)). So I turned to smoothies instead.
I’ve probably put every conceivable thing in my blender to create my ultimate smoothie.
I will also note that while my mental health was my primary goal here, my body underwent pretty dramatic changes. I began to have the most definition in my life (it’s when my abs really began to show without flexing) and my body fat went down several percentages.
We’ll start with gear:
I started with Nutribullet and I don’t recommend. Their products break way too easily. I love the easy cleaning concept, but when you have 3-4 different vessels break, it’s game over.
So now, I use the Vitamix 5200.
While it’s expensive (this is my buyer’s philosophy for everything) you probably save money buying one thing that lasts, versus having to replace a cheap thing 4-5+ times.
Now for the recipe:
This is my current recipe as of 5/3/2020. I use much less fruit now as I’ve been experimenting with the Slow Carb Diet (which says no fruit 6 days a week aside from tomatoes and avocados)
All ingredients are organic (besides that almond/cashew milk blend is made organic yet). I also buy all of these ingredients from Costco, but you can buy elsewhere
8 fl oz (1 cup) of Silk almond/cashew protein milk
You can just use organic almond milk or cashew
1 scoop of Athletic Greens
I so badly want my own code for this haha. I will plug AG forever though.
2-3 big handfuls of Power Greens (spinach + kale)
I get the big bag from Costco
This is the largest % of the smoothie
1/4 Cup Dark Sweet Cherries
Cherries are the lowest fruit on the glycemic index (GI)
Cherries are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, boost exercise recovery, improve sleep quality, and taste delicious
I will also interchangeably use wild blueberries
1 scoop Orgain Superfood Protein Powder, Vanilla
Use code: DRAINO for 30% off
I only use one scoop because there are several other sources of protein here
10g of protein and 12g of Omegas 3 & 6.
Best seed in the game, I’ll take over chia, flax, or pumpkin, any day
1 heaping tbsp of almond butter
The only ingredient should be "almonds" or "roasted almonds"
NuttZo Butter is also fire, but quite expensive
I often use raw nuts mixes instead
Walnuts were my favorite until I realized I’m slightly allergic - they are super good for you though
Occasional adds:
If you want to make it sweeter, use honey local from your region, or agave if you’re vegan
Half a banana -> super yummy, I just don’t do it every time because of the fruit thing
